INEC Engages 17,000 Adhoc Staff For Ondo Polls


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it has recruited no fewer than 17,000 adhoc staff for the conduct of October 10, 2020, governorship election in Ondo State.

The commission disclosed that out of the figure, 15,000 National Youths Service Corps(NYSC) members will work as polling officers during the election.
INEC National Commissioner and chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye made the disclosure in Akure, the Ondo State capital at a workshop organised for journalists in the state yesterday.

Okoye, who also said the commission will engage civil servants and heads of tertiary institutions as collation and presiding officers insisted that the commission would not allow any voter to vote without facemask.

According to the national commissioner, the commission will deploy INEC viewing portal for both Edo and Ondo gubernatorial elections.
Okoye said, “ INEC will drive technology, technology will not drive us. Technology that did not meet our standard will be drop. So, INEC’s viewing portal will be used for the forthcoming Edo and Ondo gover-norship elections.”
Specifically, Okoye said the commission is currently working with the Presidential Committee on COVID-19 and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to avoid the spread of COVID-19 during and after the October 10 election in the state.
Okoye said the electoral body is also working with the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to make available infrared thermometers in all the polling units during the election.

While restating the resolves of the commission that the use of branded nose masks would not be al-lowed during the election, Okoye added that the commission is committed to the conduct of credible elections in Edo and Ondo states.
