Oyo Shuns FG Advance to Cancel 2020 WASSCE Exam

Despite federal government’s decision on reopening of schools and conducting the 2020 West Afri-can Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the Senior Secondary School 3 students, Oyo State government has insisted that schools in the state would remain open and also conduct the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate examination.

The federal government had ealier stated that students would not participate in the examination due to the increase in the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu had declared that schools should remain closed for the safety of the students.
Making Oyo State government’s decision known, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Olasunkanmi Olaleye challenged the legality of the minister’s decision saying, “Schools in Oyo State will remain open and also go on to write 2020 WASSCE unless directed otherwise by the West Afri-can Examination Council (WAEC)”.

He disclosed that schools have re-opened in Oyo State and were complying with the safety proto-col, adding that the directive by the minister of Education was only applicable to federal govern-ment schools.

Olaleye concluded that pending an official directive or statement from the governor and the WAEC, Oyo schools would remain open in preparation for the WASSCE.

He explained that the examination was part of educational development and cannot be ignored, assuring the public that they were following safety protocols and waiting for WAEC’s reaction so that the state government could assess the situation.
