Nigeria Senate on Tuesday passed a bill establishing the Nigerian Army University, Biu in Borno State, North-East Nigeria.
The bill was sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume representing Borno South Senatorial district and Chairman Senate Committee on Army.
“The bill seeks an Act to establish a Nigerian Army University in Borno to make comprehensive provisions for due management and administration and related military matters”.
Ndume while outlining the advantages of establishing a tertiary institutions by the military said, it was an opportunity to provide quality education and shore up educational inadequacies among the ranks of the army.
He added some features of the (NAU) to be engagement in technological and vocational training as well as providing instructions in accordance with Army doctrines.
Senator Mohammed Adamu Aliero while seconding the motion, said the University has been established with an annual budget approved but that the Senate needs to give it a legal framework.
Aliero emphasised that people should not see the University as that of the people of North East but the University of all Nigerians.
“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, let me emphasise that the University is for all Nigerians and not that of the people of the North East”.
Senator Boroffice Ajayi contribution emphasised on the research that underlies special University like the NAU. He argued that Senate should support the bill for formally since the institution was already existing.
Senator George Thompson Sekibo on his part explained that over ten million people apply for University education annually, but two million gets admission.
He advised that the University should restrict itself to training on Security related courses such as military hardware and others.
After contributions from other lawmakers in favour of the bill, Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan remarked that Nigeria needs a University that could deal with contemporary challenges.
He referred the bill to the Senate committee on Army to report back in two weeks time.
